Pat Ottensmeyer will serve as the next president of Kansas City Southern Railway Co.

On Friday, the Kansas City-based railway company (NYSE: KSU) announced Ottensmeyer will be promoted to president on March 1. A release said the move is part of the company's succession-planning process.

Ottensmeyer, currently the company's chief marketing officer, will continue to report to CEO David Starling. As the president, Ottensmeyer will continue his sales and marketing duties and become responsible for operations — which includes transportation, engineering, mechanical, network operations, operations support and information technology.

In a release, Starling said he's excited about Ottensmeyer's promotion. "He has served as the company's chief financial officer and, most recently, its chief marketing officer, which has prepared him for his new role as president," Starling said.

Ottensmeyer has been with Kansas City Southern since 2006. Before coming to Kansas City Southern, Ottensmeyer worked as a CFO at pharmaceutical company Intranasal Therapeutics Inc., vice president of finance and treasurer at Fort Worth, Texas, railway company BNSF Railway Co. and senior vice president at Charlotte-based Bank of America.
